Course Information

Intended learning outcomes

On completing the course, students should be familiar with:

  • the phonemes of English 
  • intonation and other prosodic features 
  • word and sentence stress 
  • the (IPA) notation of the above and their realisation in a British standard 
  • connected-speech phenomena: linking, reduction, pausing

Teaching methodology

Lecture, group work, individual work, lots of home practice, drama based approach.

Course content

The course aims to improve the students' (moderate RP, i.e. General British English) pronunciation skills by increasing awareness and providing concrete practice opportunities. An indispensable part of the course is provided by the students' individual, continual work.

Prior knowledge expected

High B2 level by ECFR-standards.
