Intendierte Lernergebnisse

This course is intended for students in their first year of the BA programme of English and American studies and introduces them to literary theory. The main objective is to give them an understanding of the most important genres of literature, literary periods, theoretical approaches and academic written analysis.

Short inputs, analysis of texts, and discussions with peers.

Im Fall von online durchgeführten Prüfungen sind die Standards zu beachten, die die technischen Geräte der Studierenden erfüllen müssen, um an diesen Prüfungen teilnehmen zu können.

Prüfungsmethode/n

Active participation, midterm and final exam as well as a short response paper.

Beurteilungskriterien/-maßstäbe

  • 25% = active participation in class and at home
     As this is a continuous assessment course, students are required to attend class. Students are expected to participate in and contribute to group discussions in class as well as in analyses, think critically and independently, and most importantly: have fun!
  • 25% = midterm exam at the end of the first half of the semester
     The class will be split in half for a short midterm exam (30-45 minutes) to ensure the students understood the topics that have been dealt with.
  • 25% = final exam at the end of the semester

  • 25% = response paper after the course ended
         Students are expected to write a short response paper of 2-3 pages, making use of one of the theoretical approaches on a text of their choice.
