LV-Beschreibung

Intendierte Lernergebnisse

After completing this course, students …

  • have an understanding of core theories and methodologies in social scientific Gender Studies;
  • can conceptualise the intersections between gender and other axes of oppression, particularly race, sexuality, class, and dis-/ability;
  • can link Gender Studies theories to the power relations that characterise current societal contexts as well as their own lived experiences;
  • understand the interconnectedness of power hierarchies and ways of knowing;
  • can better express themselves about gender-related issues in both academic and non-academic contexts.

Lehrmethodik

My approach to teaching and learning is inspired by Black_queer_trans_feminist approaches to emancipatory learning spaces. I aim to foster opportunities for connecting academic perspectives to societal power relations and participants’ lived experiences. The methods I use are designed to support all participants in reflecting on the relevance of the academic topics we discuss to their/our own lives. These methods include conventional academic discussions, peer-teaching, and various ways of creatively engaging with the course topics.

A learning space – even one that seeks to be ‘emancipatory’ – is not free from societal, institutional and interpersonal power relations. However, I work to foster an atmosphere for participants to feel safe to experience new ways of thinking/feeling, to dis-/agree, to ask questions, to make mistakes, and to offer their own opinions, and I invite all participants to also contribute towards that goal. Specifically, in addition to ‘atmospheric’ aspects such as addressing questions of how we can engage with each other and the course topics in respectful and less hierarchical ways, the grading system is designed to give you a degree of choice in how you engage with the course topics and you will never be required to take part in specific activities that we do as part of the course.

Inhalt/e

Whom do we refer to when we talk of ‘women’ and ‘men’? What is gender anyways? What is power and how does it affect societies and individual lives? How do we come to know answers to these questions? This course seeks to address these and other questions on the basis that they are necessarily implicated in power relations beyond those that can be reduced to ‘gender’ alone, consistently connecting questions around gender and feminism to issues such as race, post-/coloniality, trans and queerness, sexuality, class and dis-/ability.

The course draws on Black feminist standpoint theories and feminist critiques of science to better understand how knowledge about the world is arrived at and at what cost. We explore how constructions of sex and gender are tied to colonial knowledge projects and engage with the constructedness of human bodies and the categories they/we are placed in. We engage with the concept of intersectionality as a way of understanding how different axes of power such as sexism, racism, transphobia and ableism are interlinked and influence each other. We examine the workings of power on different (e.g., structural, institutional, and interpersonal) levels and draw on the concept of privilege to understand how power operates both on the ‘powerless’ and the ‘powerful’ (as well as question whether that distinction is always so clear-cut).

The course seeks to provide a space for connecting key questions in and of Gender Studies to participants’ lived experiences, seeking to foster an environment in which societal norms and power arrangements can be addressed critically. It aims to provide space/resources for students to critically reflect on their own circumstances to encourage learning beyond memorisation with the goal of supporting students in developing understanding and agency in intersectional power relations as mutually constitutive.

Accessibility

Accessibility is meant in a broad way here: What do you need to participate in the course in a way that works well for you? This can include, for example, technical, temporal, social and other aspects.

You have a right to access the course in a manner that is, as far as possible, free from discrimination and barriers. I will do my best to provide materials in accessible formats and would like to also ask all participants to do the same. I always announce rough times for the breaks at the start of each session, and you are free to leave the room whenever you want.

If you have any specific requirements or suggestions, please let me know. I will also send out a survey ahead of our first class to ask all participants about their accessibility requirements.

Language

The main course language is English, but you are invited to contribute any and all other languages that you may use.

Inter, Trans, Non-Binary

It is important to me that both I and other participants use the names, pronouns etc. that participants want us to use. I myself use gender-neutral pronouns (they/them/their, or simply my name) and would like to be addressed in a gender-neutral way.

If your name on the university system is not the one you actually use, please send me an email to let me know which name you’d like me to use to refer to you. (Unfortunately, I cannot change the name that will be displayed on Moodle, but the online components of the course are designed in such a way that you can avoid using an incorrect name for yourself wherever possible.)

Prüfungsinformationen

Im Fall von online durchgeführten Prüfungen sind die Standards zu beachten, die die technischen Geräte der Studierenden erfüllen müssen, um an diesen Prüfungen teilnehmen zu können.

Prüfungsmethode/n

Issues around power and coercion matter in educational settings. Therefore, the grading system is designed in such a way that you can choose from various activities based on your preferences and learning styles. This means that you are not expected to engage in all the activities available.

These activities include:

  • participation in the course
  • engaging with the course materials and discussions on the e-learning platform
  • reflection pieces on the topics of each session
  • discussion groups of 4–5 students that meet regularly (online or offline) to talk about course topics
  • peer teaching, in which small groups of students teach part of our joint classes based on material that I suggest
  • a final project (which can take many different forms, from conventional academic essays to drawings, short videos, video games, knitted items, etc.)

Prüfungsinhalt/e

Most activities cover the range of topics we engage with in the course. For the peer teaching and the final project, you pick a specific topic that you engage with in more depth.

Beurteilungskriterien/-maßstäbe

In order to pass the course, you need to have attended at least 75% of our classes. If there are ‘important reasons’ (as the powers that be like to call them) for your being unable to fulfill this requirement, we can find an alternative solution together. Such important reasons include, at the very least, both acute and chronic illnesses and mental health issues, disabilities, care duties for people that are significant in your life, etc. Please don’t hesitate to talk to me in these cases.

Participation, online discussions, the learning groups and the reflection pieces are self-graded, while your grades on the peer-teaching and final project result from a combination of your own assessment and mine, based on criteria that you can find in the course guide (which will be available on Moodle).
