LV-Beschreibung
Intendierte Lernergebnisse
A key learning objective is to equip students with the ability to critically assess and condense the underlying literature and to present the results coherently using the terminology and the toolkit of economics.
Lehrmethodik
Teaching method(s): The course will take place in seminar format, i.e., with presentations by the participants and discussions (moderated by the lecturer) of the selected literature. Details will be provided at the kick-off meeting.
In view of the seminar format, which includes intensive discussions, a maximum of eight participants will be accepted.
Inhalt/e
After several decades of low inflation in many parts of the world, inflation has come back – also, but not only, to the Euro Area and thus Austria. The latest available numbers indicate an annual Harmonized Index ofConsumer Prices (HICP) inflation rate for June 2022 (compared to June 2021) of 8.6% for the Euro Area and a similar number for Austria. These are the highest observed inflation rates for more than four decades. In this seminar we will: (i) discuss the definition and measurement of inflation rates and look at some historical episodes of very high (and low) inflation rates; (ii) discuss the economic (welfare) costs of (high) inflation rates, (iii) discuss the factors contributing to high inflation rates and also (iv) discuss policy options – in particular of central banks – to combat high inflation rates (as well as the costs associated with doing so).
In doing so the material will range from discussing the precise definition of the Harmonized Index of Consumer Prices[1] to empirical analyses of historic inflation episodes to more theory-oriented analyses trying to understand the costs of inflation as well as the policy options. To understand the selected articles, we need to possess – or develop in this seminar – a sufficient understanding of the economic models used as well as the empirical tools used. In this respect it is important that we will acknowledge the limits of our knowledge and skills. The tools used in the literature are cornerstones for many areas in economics, finance and some parts of business studies.

Erwartete Vorkenntnisse

Prerequisites: Completion of the Micro- andMacroeconomics courses is most highly recommended.
Literatur
Literature: Suggestions will be provided at the kick-off meeting. Strong preferences by the participants for specific topics can and will be handled flexibly.
