American folklore: Still relevant?
The central focus of the course is American folklore. The cultural artefacts that will be taken into consideration include a targeted selection of stories, anecdotes, songs, and other orally transmitted texts which are widely considered to be defining features of (traditional) American culture. The issue will be approached from multiple perspectives and will consider a variety of media, ranging from the collection, transcription and dissemination of material from the oral tradition, to versions launched by the “culture industry”, e.g. TV or Walt Disney, to more recent reminders that the tradition is still alive, as exemplified by Kurt Cobain, Nick Cave or Bruce Springsteen. In short, the course aims to introduce students to a structural pillar of traditional American culture, examine and reflect on how this culture is transmitted and re-interpreted in contemporary society, and, by asking whether awareness of folklore is important for non-natives, participate in the conversation on what is known as cultural literacy.
