Intendierte Lernergebnisse

This course aims to provide students with sound knowledge and a critical understanding of different aspects of entrepreneurship research. The course will provide students with a general overview of the main aspects of the entrepreneurship field, including major theories and subject areas, peer-reviewed academic journals, levels of analysis, data collection, established databases, and data analysis methods.

Upon completion of the course, students should understand the main entrepreneurship theories, specifics of important journals with an impact factor in the area of entrepreneurship studies, and methods used in entrepreneurship research. They will gain knowledge on the most recent contributions, relevant topics and scientific literature.

Lehrmethodik

 The course is focused on understanding the current state of the art in the field of entrepreneurship. Students will discuss the influential entrepreneurship theories, methods used for data collection and data analysis. They will explore the most influential academic journals in the area of entrepreneurship and their specifics. The students will also learn how to empirically work with established entrepreneurship databases such as the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor. Furthermore, the course will reveal the differences in entrepreneurship research at different levels of analysis, i. e. at t the micro (firm or individual), meso (industry or region), and macro (country or group of countries) levels.

Inhalt/e

Special emphasis will be given to the following topics:

  • Introduction, entrepreneurship as a field of research
  • Major peer-reviewed entrepreneurship journals and their specifics
  • Research areas in the entrepreneurship field
  • Main entrepreneurship-related concepts and theories
  • Levels of analysis: individual, team, firm, industry, region, country, group of countries
  • Methods of data collection and available datasets in entrepreneurship studies
  • Methods of data analysis in entrepreneurship
  • Analysis of top articles in the subject area

Prüfungsinformationen

Im Fall von online durchgeführten Prüfungen sind die Standards zu beachten, die die technischen Geräte der Studierenden erfüllen müssen, um an diesen Prüfungen teilnehmen zu können.

Prüfungsmethode/n

Students will be expected to be physically present in each session. Some of the sessions will include working with statistical software (STATA, SPSSS). Students are encouraged to bring their laptops and to work with the lecturer together during the class. They are recommended to install student (free) versions of the software (STATA, SPSS) and prepare them for the class. 

Prüfungsinhalt/e

Students must follow the reading expectations, and they must chair one selected course session on their own when they must also provide a handout. The handout will consist of a three-page summary of three selected papers relevant to the topic (including a brief summary, methodology, data, findings and own critical assessment) and minutes from the session (key ideas, relevant comments critique and concluding remarks). For each seminar, all students need to select two papers from the reading list and then find another research paper via academic searching engines (i.e. Web of Science, Scopus, Google Scholar) that are relevant to the topic of their interest.

Beurteilungskriterien/-maßstäbe

After the course has been taken, a seminar paper (doc or docx) must be delivered (Master Students: 3500 words, Doctoral Students: 4500 words). Final deadline: 17th December 2021.
