Intendierte Lernergebnisse

At the end of this course, students will be expected to be able to:

  • identify key time periods of (Old) English and their corresponding linguistic features;
  • identify key features of major Old English dialects;
  • demonstrate knowledge of basic Old English grammar and lexis;
  • explain how language change happens (e.g., vowel shifts, amelioration, etc.);
  • analyze Old English texts and describe their salient linguistic features; and
  • produce translations of OE texts examined in class and for homework into PDE.

Inhalt/e

This course provides an introduction to Old English. In this course the following topics will be discussed:

  • external/internal history of Old English (OE);
  • diachronic/synchronic history of Old English;
  • basic elements of Old English phonology, morphology, and syntax; and
  • basic Old English semantics and lexis; and
  • the relationship of OE to present-day English (PDE)/German.

Other topics can be taken into consideration depending on student interest and will be agree upon in class.

Erwartete Vorkenntnisse

No previous knowledge of Old English is expected. Students are expected to have a basic knowledge of the history of English as covered in the course “Development of English.” Students should also have a basic to moderate knowledge regarding the following linguistic topics: the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA), phonology, morphology, syntax, and semantics. Lack of knowledge in these subfields in linguistics is likely to prove insufficient in being successful in this course. Supplementary material on these subfields can be made available upon request for remedial learning purposes.

Curriculare Anmeldevoraussetzungen

For the BA in Anglistik und Amerikanistik, at least one of the courses from the Pflichtfächer in Fachliches Grund- und Aufbaustudium Linguistics is required(Introduction to Linguistics II, Development of English). Ideally, both courses have been successfully completed. In exceptional circumstances, admission to the course may be granted at the discretion of the instructor even if certain prerequisites have not been met.

All materials will be made available on Moodle in the form of PDFs/PPTs. Upon request, the materials can be compiled into a reader that can be made available for purchase from the ÖH Printing Service.

Lectures will take place according to university regulations either on-campus or online.

Students will be assessed using the following criteria:

  • written vocabulary/grammar quiz(zes); 
  • final written examination (vocabulary, grammar, short translation (OE > PDE), language history); and
  • participation in-class and on Moodle forums.

Beurteilungskriterien/-maßstäbe

All texts produced in the course (forum posts, homework assignments, et al.) must fulfill departmental standards and expectations regarding written work (e.g., adhering to appropriate style/register, fair use of academic sources, avoiding plagiarism, et al.). 

Students are expected to attend class regularly and participate actively in a/synchronous discussions.

Performance on exams should reflect mastery of the material covered. Specifics about quiz/exam content will be given in class.
