Course Information

Intended learning outcomes

The course covers the basics of writing and presenting a scientific text. The students become familiar with important methods and tools and learn how to apply them by:

  • identifying an issue; 
  • researching, assessing,
  • citing and paraphrasing the necessary information; 
  • planning and writing texts; 
  • employing descriptive, narrative and expository modes; 
  • recognizing and correcting basic grammatical errors, specifically errors of: 
    • subject/verb agreement,
    • verb tense, 
    • pronoun agreement, 
    • usage ofprepositions and articles; etc
  • improving academic and idiomatic vocabulary.



Teaching methodology including the use of eLearning tools

  • On-line Session: presentation of a Power Point Lecture; 
  • Writing Groups /Writing as a Team
  • Moodle Writing Activities; 
  • Individual Portfolio: 
    • short presentations, 
    • exercises for self check  using case studies),
    •  feedback and discussion; 
  • Writing Workshops.
  • In-class Tests.

Course content

The rules and conventions of scientific writing should be communicated early and often. This course is designed to reinforce

  •  essay composition skills and
  •  introduce students to the practice of writing for academic purposes.

It will place equal or greater emphasis on macro-level composition skills such as: 

  • essay structure,
  • paragraph structure, 
  • coherence, unity; 

and micro-level skills such as: 

  • sentence structure,
  •  grammar, 
  • vocabulary, 
  • spelling and mechanics.

Course topics will also include the following:

  •  basic rhetorical modes (narration, description, exposition);
  •  writing process (pre-writing, writing, re-writing); 
  • effective use of quotation, paraphrase and summary;
  •  grammar & mechanics as needed; 
  • reading and responding to assigned readings.

Prior knowledge expected

Very good knowledge of English.

Examination topic(s)

You need to demonstrate 4 Course Learning Outcomes:

CLO 1- Use brainstorming, organizing and planning techniques to generate ideas and narrow down a topic before completing a plan for a piece of writing, and be able to locate and select appropriate sources when needed including the use of library resources.

CLO 2- Deploy appropriate skills and strategies to further understanding of academic vocabulary in context.

CLO 3- Use material from relevant reliable sources to develop clear and detailed text acknowledging materials used by citing sources in APA or Harvard format and using direct quotations correctly so that detailed information is communicated reliably and with appropriate acknowledgement. Understanding the seriousness of plagiarizing and the consequences of doing so.

CLO 4- Draft, revise, edit and proofread written work largely independently using appropriate reference materials, tools, software or websites where necessary.

Writing Portfolio will reflect 

  • your readings and writing skills that have been taught over the period of the course.
  • your ability to demonstrate the knowledge of  5 Course Modules of theory and practice, 
  • successfully done  5 self-check Sets of exercises in Moodle
  • Final Course Project being presented at an online Course Conference


Assessment criteria / Standards of assessment for examinations

To finish the Course successfully you need to:

  • pass 4 graded Tests based on 5  MODULES of Theory and Practice in 12 Power Point Lectures and 5 Courseworks (SET-Blocks of Exercises in MOODLE_Self-check Sections).
  • present 1 graded Final Course Project 
  • participate actively in on-line sessions
