Inhalt/e
As English has become the global language of scientific communication, publication, and exchange in the technical sciences and economics, there is an increasing demand for competent writing in English within university courses. It is, therefore, especially important to acquire and practice English writing skills. This course teaches the basics of scientific writing in English – understanding texts and how to use them in your own writing, the writing process itself, arguments in scientific writing, text organisation and structure, and the language itself – which will then also be put into practice.
Session I: Getting off to an Effective Start
- basic skills/basic knowledge for planning scientific texts
- formalities/standards of writing a BA thesis
- research tools and techniques
- scientific reading strategies and reading techniques
Session II and III: How to find a Structure for Your Text
- time management and creating a schedule
- narrowing down the topic and specifying the research question
- drawing up a preliminary outline (table of contents)
- analysis of best practice examples
- different sections of a BA thesis (Abstract, Introduction…)
Session IV and V: Writing and Revising Your Text
- presenting arguments and one’s own opinion
- integrating (in)direct quotations into one’s text
- English scientific writing:
- norms and conventions,
- language and style,
- coherence and cohesion (from sentence to paragraph to text)
- writing your first draft (incl. resources)
- peer feedback
- analysis of best practice examples
- revision strategies
