Intendierte Lernergebnisse

The course develops

- students’ comprehensive understanding of the cultural history of Europe.

- students’ understanding of the cultural diversity and the cultural heritage of Europe.

- students’ writing skills in the field of cultural history.

- students’ ability to conduct independent research.

- students’ presentation skills.

Lehrmethodik

E-learning format via Moodle platform: Lecture, discussion, presentations, writing assignments. The language of instruction and assessment is English.

Inhalt/e

The course offers an introduction to the cultural history of Europe from the Middle Ages to the end of the 20th century. Students will understand the role of the diverse cultural, educational, scientific, art, social and ecclesiastical institutions and movements in forming European culture. The course also provides an overview on the social history of Europe.

Prüfungsmethode/n

1. Oral presentation (20 min.)

2. Reading notes for each class. (1 page)

3. Essay (8-10 pages, proper citation is required; APA referencing style; bibliography list is required; Line spacing 1.5; Font size: 12; Times New Roman)

4. Active participation in class discussions (on course readings/ materials/videos, etc.)

5.) Epidemics and major diseases in Europe in the 19th century. (Cholera; Smallpox; Typhus; etc.) Medical responses and treatments. 

6.) Pandemics and major diseases in Europe in the 20th century. (Spanish Flu; other Twentieth-Century Influenza Pandemics; Malaria; Anthrax; Tuberculosis; etc.) Public health improvements in the 20th century. Sanitation, Hygiene, Vaccination.
