Course Information
Intended learning outcomes
In this class the focus is on language education rather than language learning. In other words, attention will be drawn to culture- and identity-related issues and how they may impact language learning processes. Moreover, the aim of this class is to suggest a timely concept for language- and culture-learning in the light of a world increasingly shaped by globalization processes. In terms of content, both literary and non-literary texts will be discussed.
Teaching methodology
This course is project-based with a twin focus on theoretical concepts and concrete examples for classroom use.
Course content
The content of this course may include but is not limited to the following topics:
- Identity construction and language learning;
- CLIL-teaching and inter/transcultural learning;
- Integrating language and cultural learning;
- Helping language teachers become (inter)cultural mediators;
- Discussing different paradigms for cultural learning (e.g., inter- and transculturality);
- Structuring experiential learning processes; and
- Working with literary texts.

Examination methodology
(1) Regular attendance;
(2) Active participation; and
(3) Completion of homework/Moodle-based assignments; and
(3) An academic, research-based essay (approx. 3000 words).

(1) Active participation (Students need to come well-prepared to all sessions);
(2) Familiarity with the topics and theories discussed in class; and
