Course Information

Intended learning outcomes

The course is designed to provide a first-hand insight into conducting language research from the point of the conception of an idea to the point of completing your work (thesis) and publishing it. The issues we discuss will be applied individually to your research projects. Upon completion of the course, students should be able to: 

- demonstrate knowledge of issues in conducting scientific research; 

- demonstrate a competence in conducting linguistic research; and 

- be fully able to successfully complete your own projects.

Teaching methodology

The classes will typically include lectures followed by mini discussions and practical assignments at home.

  • Posing your task
  • Means of analysis
  • Interpreting the data – quantitative vs. qualitative
  • Presenting your results
  • Scouting and applying for possible publishing venues: conferences, journals, etc.
  • Writing abstracts/proposals for conferences
  • Extracting and developing conference papers from your thesis
  • Winning readers via the ‘blurb’ of your books
  • Revisiting - developing - extrapolating: towards a PhD
  • Applying for grants
