LV-Beschreibung

Intendierte Lernergebnisse

Experience the deeper meaning of walking as an act of reflection and introspection. Study a large selection of theoretical texts framing the phenomenon in its historical importance between ancient myths, ever-changing connotations of walking and class, ethnicity, gender, and avant-gardist art movements. Discuss the relevance of these insights in terms of evaluating personal experiences and their artistic expression. Examine the peripatetic spirit by following the paths of key artists from Londonian city-slickers, to North American Naturalists, and contemporary designers of virtual worlds. Explore the meaning of walking in your own life in an art happening and in a workshop on digital landscapes.

By the end of the semester, you have gained an understanding of peripatetic writing as an important, recurring pillar in Western culture. You will be able to recall key texts, thinkers, and movements, as well as understand how your own modes of (creative) expression may benefit from the union of walking and introspection.

Lehrmethodik

Synchronous sessions featuring lecture and discussion parts, asynchronous student presentations, as well as two block sessions: one art happening and one workshop.

Inhalt/e

The seminar raises students’ awareness of walking as an act of philosophical, political and artistic importance in Western, especially Anglophone, cultures.

A complete list of artworks discussed is provided with a syllabus during the first session.

Literatur

The seminar draws from various artistic and intellectual sources. Shorter mandatory texts, mainly in the shape of theoretical secondary reading and short stories, are provided on Moodle.

In addition, students are expected to buy or otherwise familiarise themselves with the following foundational works:

  • Novel: Sinclair, Ian. Lud Heat: A Book of the Dead Hamlets. [1975] 2012. Cheltenham: Skylight Press.
  • Videogame: The Chinese Room. 2015. Everybody’s Gone to the Rapture. San Mateo: Sony Interactive Entertainment.

Prüfungsinformationen

Im Fall von online durchgeführten Prüfungen sind die Standards zu beachten, die die technischen Geräte der Studierenden erfüllen müssen, um an diesen Prüfungen teilnehmen zu können.

Prüfungsmethode/n

The seminar features three central assessments. Students must

  • compose a handout summarising one session and its accompanying research text
  • partake in a peripatetic art happening in Klagenfurt and share a portfolio of their experiences with the seminar
  • write a term paper that discusses walking as a phenomenon in an artwork (novel, film, videogame…) of their choice

Failing one of these three central assessments (handout, peripatetic exercise, term paper) fails the entire course!

Furthermore, the final grade is influenced by student participation.

Prüfungsinhalt/e

Handout: Students (alone or in a group, depending on the number of seminar participants) must compose a handout summarising one session and its accompanying research text.

(Worth 30% of the final mark)

Art happening and portfolio: In the tradition of artistic practices dedicated to mindful walking, this seminar features an artistic happening in which students are encouraged to experience a cityscape from a novel, perchance enlightening perspective. As part of the experience, students are expected to document their journey via creative outlets and to sheir their notes with the seminar.

Attending the happening is absolutely mandatory to successfully participate in the seminar.

(See “Participation” )

Term paper: Students conclude the seminar with a term paper of 2500 to 3000 words. The term paper is supposed to be the independent analysis of a self-chosen artwork in which the phenomenon of walking plays a prominent role. A reliance on theoretical knowledge on walking as an experiential practice as derived from the seminar is expected to demonstrate the ability to portray analytical findings and a critical reflection upon them.

Students are generally expected to discuss an artwork not featured in the seminar’s main sessions and to rely on adequate secondary sources beyond the seminar syllabus.

(Worth 40% of the final mark)

Participation: Students must regularly attend the seminar and engage in discussions and activities. This includes the mandatory participation in the seminar’s art happening and its creative reflection via a portfolio.

(Worth 30% of the final mark)
