Course content

Language is probably the most fascinating characteristic of humans since it is our essential means to relate to each other as social beings. As such, it is an expression of how we perceive, construct, and interact with our environment. Language use comprises a range of cognitive involvement from spontaneous choice of words to planned and well-reflected discourse. In this introductory class, we will take a brief look at linguistics as a vast field of the scholarly and scientific study of language. We will discuss the basic design features of human language and then start our exploration of the English language, which will take us to the sounds of English, to the structure of words and how they can be formed, and to the design of sentences and their components.
