Course Information

Intended learning outcomes

Students will understand the complex interrelationships between social, cultural, and political developments on the British Isles during the (long) Renaissance era. They will be familiar with key texts, their literary styles, and core themes. They will be able to critically situate and academically discuss British texts of the Renaissance period.

Teaching methodology including the use of eLearning tools

Short theoretical and contextualising inputs, student presentations, plenary discussion and analysis of texts.

Course content

Definition and development of Renaissance culture on the British Isles. Seminal texts from the period until the late 17th century.

Literature

Theoretical texts and other course literature will be made available on Moodle. Students are expected to at least own a copy of the text they present on.

Examination information

Im Fall von online durchgeführten Prüfungen sind die Standards zu beachten, die die technischen Geräte der Studierenden erfüllen müssen, um an diesen Prüfungen teilnehmen zu können.

Examination methodology

The final grade is an aggregate of:

20% - Active participation in class during discussions and analyses, as well as thorough preparation for class work.

30% - Student presentation during the semester on one of the key texts of the era.

50% - SE-paper after the end of the semester (pdf, 4000 words) to be handed in by the end of the following semester.

Failing one of the three pillars of assessment fails the entre course.

Examination topic(s)

Texts covered in class. Socio-cultural context and history of Renaissance society, cultures, and literatures on the British Isles. Students can freely choose the topic of their final paper within the framework of the class topic.


Assessment criteria / Standards of assessment for examinations

Quality and quantity of information, precision and depth of analysis, structure and quality of argument, quality and quantity of secondary sources used.
