Course Information

Intended learning outcomes

Students will learn the principles of short story writing through theory, the analysis of literary examples, discussion, and exercise. They will establish connections between individual texts and begin to understand and develop their personal process and relationship to the material.

Teaching methodology including the use of eLearning tools

Short lecture inputs; in-depth discussions of assigned texts; short exercises.

Course content

In this class we will be reading a diverse range of great short stories and analyzing them with a focus on narrative technique to understand the ways in which different writers -- from Edgar Allan Poe to Jhumpa Lahiri and Sandra Cisneros -- have addressed issues of plot, character, place and theme. We will also read some theoretical texts on short story writing and use some exercises to put these principles into practice. Our focus throughout the semester will be on both the writers' process and the literary result.

Literature

All texts will be provided by the instructor on Moodle.

Examination information

Im Fall von online durchgeführten Prüfungen sind die Standards zu beachten, die die technischen Geräte der Studierenden erfüllen müssen, um an diesen Prüfungen teilnehmen zu können.
