Intendierte Lernergebnisse
Upon completing this seminar, students will be familiar with current linguistic approaches and methods to analyze multimodal communication on social networking sites such as Snapchat or Twitter. They will be able to answer the following questions:
- Computer-mediated communication: what are the affordances and limitations of communicating online?
- How do text, visuals, emojis etc. multimodally interact in the overall meaning making process?
- What are the linguistic specificities of #? of Snapchat? of Instagram etc.
- How are identities (youth, gender, sexuality etc.) co-constructed in and via users' online communities?
- How can we linguistically analyze such multimodal online communication?

Lehrmethodik inkl. Einsatz von eLearning-Tools
- theoretical input based on up-to-date linguistic research on multimodal computer-mediated communication in social networking sites / on social media
- group discussions on selected topics / data excerpts
- oral presentation by students (focus on theoretical insights, but also working with / presenting concrete data from social media sites): students will gather in small groups and carry out small research projects, which will then be presented in class

Students must be familar with basic linguistic concepts in the context of communication and interaction

Prüfungsinformationen
Prüfungsmethode/n
Students are required to hold an oral presentation, to write a seminar paper (details to be explained on the seminar accompanying syllabus) and actively participate (i.e. read all the required literature, participate in discussions) in the seminar.
Prüfungsinhalt/e
Thematic scope of both, oral presentation and seminar paper, are available on the syllabus.
Based on the seminar program, students register for broad topics, whose specification will be discussed with me. Students are invited to make suggestions and come up with relevant literature

Beurteilungskriterien/-maßstäbe
oral presentation:
- adequate academic presentation and discussion of the topic
written term paper:
- seminar paper meets formal requirement (layout, ToC, language, structure, references & referencing, length) and is submitted on time
- adequate academic presentation (both formally and language-wise) and discussion of the topic
- sufficient use of appropriate and up-to-date literature
active participation in class
- students must read all the required prep.reading
- participate in class
