Students will engage with a variety of ethnic American texts that express and negotiate the relationship between race and place. They will learn to critically discuss the different ways in which race and place intersect in U.S. American society.
Lehrmethodik inkl. Einsatz von eLearning-Tools
Short lecture inputs; student assignments/presentations; plenary discussion of assigned texts
Inhalt/e
Race and place have always been closely linked in the United States. From the transatlantic slave trade and the enslavement of millions of Africans on American plantations, the theft of Native American and Mexican lands, to ongoing practices of segregation, displacement, and environmental racism.
In this seminar, we will take a closer look at the complex interplay between race and place, asking question such as: How does space work and for whom in U.S. society? How do space and place both reflect and (re)produce racism and inequality? How do race and ethnicity affect experiences of living in and belonging to physical and social spaces?
We will engage with various literary texts written by ethnic American authors, including several shorter texts and the following novels: Sherri L. Smith’s Orleans and Karen Tei Yamashita’s Tropic of Orange.
Literatur
Students are expected to purchase the following novels (any edition and format):
Sherri L. Smith. Orleans.
Karen Tei Yamashita. Tropic of Orange.
All other material will be made available on Moodle.
