Inhalt/e

“The hard-boiled detective is the exceptional outsider who reveals the corruption of the world he inhabits.
Though he knows the modern city well he never quite belongs.
It is this alienation which allows him to see what others hide from themselves.”
–Jeffrey H. Mahan

Raymond Chandler. Dashiell Hammet. James Mallahan Cain. Nearly a century has passed since a group of writers created a publishing and cultural phenomenon with their bleak stories of crime and corruption, violence and romance, written in a signature style known as “hard-boiled.” There's no mistaking the style of the hard-boiled detective – his terse commentary,  cynical  perspective,  gritty  courage  in  the  face  of  hardened  criminals. Detective fiction, in its many and varied forms, would go on to fascinate audiences in the United States, Europe, and indeed throughout the world. Legendary fictional sleuths like Sherlock Holmes, Hercule Poirot, Miss Jane Marple and Philip Marlowe, to name only a few classics, are of course staples of our literary culture  as well as the inspiration of a seemingly endless stream of movie, game and television heroes that thrill and seduce one generation of viewers after another. Using graphic sex and violence, vivid but morally questionable urban  backgrounds,  and  fast-paced,  slangy  dialogue,  hard-boiled  fiction  is  a  tough, unsentimental  style  of  American  crime  writing  that  brought  a  new  tone  of realism/naturalism to the field of detective fiction.

Primarily tackling unique themes and concepts of (hardboiled) fiction, drama, film and, at times, other related topics, students are encouraged to learn the basic principles, allowing them to gain a deeper understanding of literary/media texts. Specific examples will then highlight the importance of taking a closer look at what makes analysing hardboiled fiction so fascinating.

Carefully chosen examples which make the subject easier to understand and highlight specific themes and concepts: to be announced (in class).
