LV-Beschreibung
Intendierte Lernergebnisse
Students will gain an understanding of the diversity and complexities of U.S. American petrofiction, and will be able to identify and critically work with concepts and terminology of the energy humanities. They will further develop their skills in the systematic analysis of literature, and advance their competence in interpreting texts within their specific socio-cultural and historical contexts.
Lehrmethodik inkl. Einsatz von eLearning-Tools
This course is designed to emphasize in-class student participation. Teaching methods include short input lectures, oral presentations by students, online assignments (via Moodle), in-class exploration of theoretical and primary texts through close textual analysis, and group discussion.
Inhalt/e
(Crude) oil, transformed in various ways, permeates and shapes modern human life on global, national, regional, and local levels. While its omnipresence and consumption attract unprecedented attention today, particularly in the context of climate change, this tendency also finds expression in literature, especially over the past two decades, in works of “petrofiction” (Amitav Ghosh). This seminar turns to U.S. American petrofiction, i.e. books that negotiate petroleum’s deeply formative impact on American society and culture(s). We will begin by introducing theoretical concepts such as petroculture, petromodernity, and petro-melancholia, also in the broader context of the Anthropocene. Subsequently, we will focus on three novels to explore various perspectives and techniques of U.S. petrofiction: Linda Hogan’s Mean Spirit (1990), James Howard Kunstler’s dystopia World Made By Hand (2008), and Jesmyn Ward’s Sing, Unburied, Sing (2017), a novel that addresses questions of petro-modernity in relation to African American culture and history. Thinking about these works in their specific historical and (petro-)cultural contexts will also involve questions of genre and environmental justice.
