LV-Beschreibung

Intendierte Lernergebnisse

Discover the fascinating world of horror anthologies. Understand what anthologies are and learn about their purpose in the collection and distribution of narratives. Critically examine the specific importance of anthologies to the horror genre. Raise your awareness of horror anthologies across different media traditions. Supplement your understanding with theoretical texts and discussions. Refine your research skills by conducting your own analysis of a self-chosen horror anthology.

By the end of the semester, you will be knowledgeable in the tradition of anthologies, understand their purpose and strategies in their assembly, and be able to examine their main features critically.

Lehrmethodik inkl. Einsatz von eLearning-Tools

Synchronous sessions featuring lecture elements, discussions, student presentations, as well as a shared game lab session.

Inhalt/e

The seminar gives students an overview of horror anthology works and the intentions behind their conceptualisation. It focuses on three types of cultural artefacts: prose literature, film, and video game.

A complete list of artworks discussed is provided with a syllabus during the first session.

Literatur

The seminar draws from various artistic and intellectual sources. Shorter texts, principally in the shape of theoretical secondary reading, are provided on Moodle.

Students are expected to buy or otherwise familiarise themselves with specific artworks relevant for their examination.

Prüfungsinformationen

Im Fall von online durchgeführten Prüfungen sind die Standards zu beachten, die die technischen Geräte der Studierenden erfüllen müssen, um an diesen Prüfungen teilnehmen zu können.

Prüfungsmethode/n

The seminar features two central assignments. Students must

  • present an anthology work from a pre-selected list of artworks
  • write a critical analysis of a horror-anthology in the shape of a term paper

Furthermore, the final grade is influenced by student participation.

Prüfungsinhalt/e

Presentation: Students (either alone or in a group, depending on the number of participants) must present an artwork chosen from a pre-selected canon of horror anthologies.

It is mandatory to meet at least once with your supervisor for consultation before holding your presentation.

(Worth 40% of the final mark)

Term paper: Students conclude the seminar with a term paper of 2.500 to 3.000 words. The term paper is supposed to be the independent analysis of a self-chosen horror anthology. A reliance on theoretical knowledge on (horror) anthologies as derived from the seminar is expected to demonstrate the ability to portray analytical findings and a critical reflection upon them.

Students are generally expected to discuss an anthology not featured in the seminar’s main sessions and to rely on adequate secondary sources beyond the seminar syllabus. (Worth 50% of the final mark)

Participation. (Worth 10% of the final mark)
