Course Information

Intended learning outcomes

After the Survey, students will be well equipped to work with American literature in later classes, as they understand the connections between texts, as well as texts and society.

Teaching methodology including the use of eLearning tools

Lecture and in-class discussion of examples. All lectures will be made available on Moodle along with Forums for questions and answers. In addition, there will be a synchronous Q&A session. Detailed information will be provided by email and in the class syllabus on Moodle.

Course content

As an introductory lecture course, this class provides students with an overview of American literary history and an introduction to the diverse range of literary production in the United States. It will attend to both dominant more marginal(ized) literary voices, ranging from discovery narratives and the early colonial period to the present day. We will critically engage with the notion of the American literary canon and also reflect on a range of approaches and theories that scholars have used in order to analyze and make sense of the texts included in it.

Literature

All primary texts and other relevant literature will be made available on Moodle on a weekly basis.

Examination information

Examination topic(s)

The 90-minute exam will take place ON CAMPUS if the larger situation allows for it and consist of the following:

 - 5 multiple choice questions: Four possible answers are provided and only one is correct. The correct option scores 4 points; no answer and wrong answers result in 0 points.
 - 8 open answer questions: Answer these questions in a paragraph (no bullet points) of about 150 words each. Depending on the quality of your answer, you score between 0 and 10 points.
 - Voluntary Bonus Option: Pick one American text discussed in class and not already the subject of one of the other questions. In about 250 words briefly contextualise your example and explain its important contribution to American literary history. You can score between 0 and 10 points that will be used to replace the open answer question with the lowest number of points (it cannot replace a multiple-choice question).

Assessment criteria / Standards of assessment for examinations
