LV-Beschreibung

Intendierte Lernergebnisse

Upon completing the course, students should have (an expanded) knowledge of

  • modern, practice-oriented translation theories and relevant terminology;
  • text types, styles, registers, varieties;
  • types of equivalence;
  • the methodology of translation;
  • machine/software translation
  • cultural and ideological issues relating to translation;
  • field- or subject-specific terminology in German and English, specifically related to art, law, and human rights (other areas may be covered as well);
  • common errors associated with translation, particularly between German and English.

Lehrmethodik inkl. Einsatz von eLearning-Tools

Students will receive input from the course instructor in theory and on best practices relating to (professional) translation. Extensive practice is expected from students; copious examples and assignments will be made available in class and on Moodle. Students are expected to be very proactive in terms of engaging in the process of translation.

Inhalt/e

This is a practice-oriented course supplemented by relevant translation theory. Students are expected to attend class having completed the required reading and (practice) translation assignments so that they can engage with their peers and the instructor in order to gain a better understanding of the topic.

Generally speaking, this class will consider translation issues between English and German though other languages may be referenced to highlight certain theoretical and practical translation concerns.

We will be working on two translation projects as part of this course be based on texts provided by two Austrian groups: the Kulturinitiative Gmünd and the Homosexuelle Inititative (HOSI) Wien). We will be working on translations of numerous materials from these groups (websites, brochures, flyers, et al.) that will then be made available to the respective group to publish as they see fit.

Students with little to no knowledge of German must discuss this with the course instructor after the first session.

Erwartete Vorkenntnisse

This proseminar builds on the foundational theories covered in the introductory lecture on translation that is part of the BA curriculum. A very good knowledge of German is highly advised though not absolutely necessary; students not having B2 or higher in German should consult with the course instructor after the first class session.

Curriculare Anmeldevoraussetzungen

Students must have successfully completed "Introduction to Translation." See your respective curriculum for further pre-requisites.

Literatur

All reading materials will be made available on Moodle. Upon request, a reader can be made available at the ÖH Service Center for purchase (price determined by the Service Center). Students do not need to purchase any materials for this course.

Prüfungsinformationen

Im Fall von online durchgeführten Prüfungen sind die Standards zu beachten, die die technischen Geräte der Studierenden erfüllen müssen, um an diesen Prüfungen teilnehmen zu können.

Prüfungsmethode/n

Students will submit one or more translations of the texts covered in the course along with an analysis/commentary of their translation(s). This will be collected in a portfolio and turned in at the end of term.

A written final exam will take place at the end of term.

Prüfungsinhalt/e

See course content for exam content. At a minimum, students will be expected to show knowledge of theories covered in class, to analyze sample translations, and to describe the process of translation.

Beurteilungskriterien/-maßstäbe

A passing grade of at least sixty percent of the material on the final examination is required to pass this course.

The translation portfolio should be turned in at the end of term and include all required materials. An incomplete portfolio will result in a failing grade.
