Course Information

Teaching methodology

Exkursion und Diskussion vor Originalen mit lokalen Expert*innen. Lektüre ausgewählter Texte, Diskussion, Gruppenarbeiten, Analyse von Beispielen Visueller Kultur (Bildende Kunst, Film, Fotografie, Comics, Werbung). Qualitative Methoden der Bildwissenschaften, Kunstgeschichte, Filmwissenschaften und Kulturwissenschaften werden vorgestellt und angewandt.

Course content

Die Lehrveranstaltung ist mit einer Exkursion  nach Venedig oder, sollte das Pandemie-bedingt schwierig sein, nach Wien (unter anderem ins Kunsthistorische Museum zu den Bildern von Canaletto) verbunden. Im Seminar untersuchen wir visuelle Medien in Bezug darauf, wie der Süden (und Südländer und Südländerinnen) über sie als pittoresker Sehnsuchtsort, als Ort des Exotischen, aber auch als Raum der Erneuerung, der Problematisierung, des Übergangs sowie der Abgrenzung in Szene gesetzt wird (bzw. werden). 

Schwerpunkthemen sind: 

Freundbilder des Anderen in Zusammenhang mit Italien und der Konstituierung des Dolce Vita Mythos über Bildmedien

Inszenierungen des Pittoresken und Exotischen, aber auch die Darstellung des/der Fremden als Barbaren

die Relationalität von Freund- und Feinbildern (etwa Italiener*innen und Türk*innen) 

die Visualisierung der gegenwärtigen Südgrenzen Europas in Filmen und Fotoserien  zum Thema Migration,  

 Bildwelten des südlichen „Balkans“ (etwa am Beispiel der filmischen Inszenierung der Roma) 

sowie die Inszenierung und bildhafte Darstellung von Mauern, die den Norden und den Süden trennen (etwa der Mauer zwischen der USA und Mexiko).
