Intendierte Lernergebnisse

[COURSE PREREQUISITE: a passing grade in Advanced language productive and receptive skills (BA) OR passing grades in the courses in MODULE ENC (Lehramt); check your curriculum and any curriculum updates to be sure.]

Students will learn the basics of how to construct a research-based academic essay. Students will read short stories by Oscar Wilde (see literature below) and will learn how to utilize primary and secondary sources in an English academic essay.

Students are expected to have the following:

  • an understanding of how to organize and write paragraphs;
  • an understanding of how to plan, write, and revise different essay types; and
  • knowledge of basic citation and referencing conventions.

Lehrmethodik inkl. Einsatz von eLearning-Tools

Students will be instructed on various aspects of academic writing and conducting research by the instructor through lectures and PPTs that will be supplemented by Moodle activities. Self- and peer-reflection/assessment forms an integral aspect of how students are expected to improve their language competency in writing skills.

Inhalt/e

This course provides an opportunity for students to practice and develop their academic writing skills in English. Some of the topics that will be covered are the structure and organization of academic texts, the nature and purpose of paragraphs, the development of coherent pieces of writing, the issue of plagiarism, and how to write term papers.

In addition to extensive in-class, peer, and teacher feedback, students are expected to engage in self-directed learning and should avail themselves of the provided materials to improve their writing.

  • doing research for assignments
  • using quotations appropriately
  • avoiding plagiarism
  • organizing writing
  • conventions of academic style
  • peer review/feedback

Erwartete Vorkenntnisse

See curriculum for which skills students should have acquired in the previous writing courses. Generally speaking, students should know how to write an essay and be confident in writing coherent paragraphs.

Literatur

Students will be provided with an electronic course reader including texts by Oscar Wilde and secondary literature relating to the Wilde's work and literary interpretation. The reader will be made available online on Moodle (for free) and at the ÖH (available for a small fee).

Other readings and assignments will be made available on Moodle.

The final examination for this course will take place in-person on campus when possible. Otherwise, it will be conducted online via Moodle. Students should follow university regulations regarding online examinations and are required to have the necessary equipment in order to take these exams.

Prüfungsmethode/n

  • Continuous assessment in the form of self-, peer-, and instructor-generated feedback
  • One or more research-based academic papers
  • Written examination at the end of term

Prüfungsinhalt/e

Advanced language competences related to writing (See CEFR for more specifics) including but not limited to an advanced lexical and syntactic range, rhetorical strategies relating to argumentation, appropriate citation of and use of primary/secondary academic sources (according to Chicago Manual of Style, Author-Date)


Beurteilungskriterien/-maßstäbe

The grading for this course will be based on:

  • a timed, in-class essay (final examination);
  • one short, outside-of-class research-based writing assignment; and
  • one long, outside-of-class research-based essay.

The in-class essay (final exam) and long essay must both have a pass grade in order to pass the course.

Students are also required to complete multiple in-class and homework assignments throughout the course of the term. These will comprise a portfolio that students will compile and improve over the course of the semester.
