Intendierte Lernergebnisse

ATTENTION: STUDENTS MUST HAVE A PASSING GRADE FOR ENGLISH FOR ACADEMIC PURPOSES IN ORDER TO TAKE THIS COURSE

By the end of this course, students should be able to:

- critically analyse an essay in terms of its structure and style

- construct an essay outline

- write a formal argumentative and compare & contrast essay implementing the structure and style taught in class

Lehrmethodik inkl. Einsatz von eLearning-Tools

Group work, extensive self-study, writing assignments in class and written homework assignments.

Students are required to regularly read academic papers in English in order to develop their academic reading skills and awareness of academic vocabulary and register.

Inhalt/e

This course focuses on academic writing and covers the following:

  • essay structure (introduction, main body and conclusion)
  • thesis statements 
  • essay planning (including outlines and proofreading)
  • essay types
  • the writing process 
  • feedback skills
  • citing and referencing (including quoting, paraphrasing and summarizing)
  • style and features of formal academic writing (including vocabulary, grammar and punctuation)

All materials to be provided in class.
