Course Information

Intended learning outcomes

The main objective of this course is to introduce first-year students of English to different literary genres, theoretical approaches, research fields and literary traditions in English literary studies.

Student will also formulate their first longer, academic, written analysis of a text of their choosing.

Teaching methodology including the use of eLearning tools

Short theoretical lecture inputs; plenary discussions and text analyses.

Course content

In the first part of this course, students will be introduced to central approaches to literary studies. Here, special attention will be drawn to the discussion of poetry, drama, and film as literary and cultural practices. Our work will build around the film Dead Poets Society (1989). When dealing with this text, the focus is on its treatment of literature and on the cultural issues discussed.

In the second part, the focus is on narrative texts (short stories, novels) and narratological concepts, as well as contemporary drama.

Literature

All materials will be made available on Moodle.

Examination information

Im Fall von online durchgeführten Prüfungen sind die Standards zu beachten, die die technischen Geräte der Studierenden erfüllen müssen, um an diesen Prüfungen teilnehmen zu können.

Examination methodology

The final grade is an aggregate of continuous assessment throughout the semester and a term paper written after the course:

  • 20% = Active participation: Come prepared, read the required texts, do any additional research necessary. Think independently, critically, and contribute to in-class discussions.
  • 40% = Online Open Book Exam: Select 10 out of 12 questions asked and reply in a short paragraph of max. 100 words each. A question scores from 0 to 5 points (think of the star rating system), depending on the quantity and quality of information given, and the point total results in your grade:
    • 46 – 50 points = 1A, or First Grade
    • 41 – 45 points = 2B, or Upper Second Grade
    • 31 – 40 points = 3C, or Lower Second Grade
    • 26 – 30 points = 4D, or Pass Grade
    • 00 – 25 points = 5F, or Fail Grade
  • 40% = PS-Paper: Short academic paper (fully referenced, bibliography, word count) presenting a theoretically contextualised critique of a text of your choice to be uploaded on Moodle and handed in as printed copy no later than February 14, 2022, 23:59 (pdf, 2000 words +/-10%).

Failing one of the three pillars of assessment means failing the entire course.

Examination topic(s)

For the written exam, only materials and texts discussed in class will be relevant.

For the PS-paper, students can freely choose the primary text they want to work with and the theoretical approach they want to apply.

Assessment criteria / Standards of assessment for examinations

Quality and quantity of information given in the exam; precision and depth of analysis, structure and quality of argument, quality and quantity of secondary sources used for the paper.
