Intendierte Lernergebnisse

Students obtain understanding about the main mechanisms and drivers of regional economic development, get acquainted with (simple) theoretical models and empirical analysis concerning regional economic development. Students learn to critically assess and condense the underlying literature and to present the results coherently using the terminology and toolkit of economics.

Lehrmethodik

Teaching method(s): The course will be taking place in seminar format, i.e. presentations by the participants and discussions (moderated by the lecturer) on the current literature on regional economic development. Details will be provided at the kick-off meeting.

In view of the seminar format, which includes intensive discussions, a maximum of 8 participants will be accepted.

Inhalt/e

Regions are important entities, both from an administrative and – related – also from an economic perspective. In this seminar we are going to discuss the main drivers for economic development of regions. What are favorable conditions for and causes of successful regional development? What is the impact of economic policies on regional development? How successful is European Union cohesion policy? We will also look at cities – a specific type of region characterized by high density of economic activity – and what determines their development. The conceptual foundation for the analysis is the theory of economic growth. Many papers in this field draw on variants of growth models and perform empirical analysis to assess and quantify the importance of different channels and mechanisms. A limiting factor for empirical analysis is that, compared to analysis at the national level, many relevant variables are not available at a regionally disaggregated level. To understand the selected papers we need to have – or develop in this seminar – a sufficient understanding of simple growth models as well as the empirical tools used in this literature (effectively multiple linear regression models and derivatives thereof). All these tools are cornerstones for applied analysis in business, finance and economics.

Erwartete Vorkenntnisse

Prior knowledge: Basic knowledge of – but even more importantly – interest in economic topics in the widest sense and willingness to address new issues; willingness to look intoeconomic models and methods. 

Prerequisites: Completion of the Micro- and Macroeconomics courses is urgently recommended.

Literature: Suggestions will be provided and discussed at the kick-off meeting. Strong preferences by the participants for specific topics can be handled flexibly.

Prüfungsmethode/n

Exam method(s): Presentation (70%) and active participation in the discussions (30%). The presentation documents („slides“, „Powerpoint“) will be included in the assessment of the presentation.

The dates for the presentations will be agreed upon at the kick-off meeting.
