Course content
Intended learning outcomes
Students are able to recognize and analyze manifestations of linguistic purism; they are aware of the historical-cultural significance of linguistic purist endeavors; they are familiar with some linguistic purist institutions and movements.
Teaching methodology
Theoretical input, group and individual work, student presentations, plenary discussions
Course content
The fear of the 'decay' of language is probably as old as human language itself. Language purism is directed against all manifestations of language change, including foreign language elements, but also dialectal or youth language elements, neologisms and new syntactic constructions or semantic change. The striving for a "pure" language is undoubtedly a lay linguistic phenomenon that affects broad strata of society, sometimes also expert linguists. Linguistic purism is associated with judgments such as 'good' or 'right' language (vs. 'bad' or 'wrong' language). In this course, we will identify and discuss current and historical manifestations of linguistic purism in different linguistic communities and examine the cultural role of the striving for a "pure language".
