Course content

We are facing a digital future. Technology is disrupting all areas of enterprise and of our lives. High-growth technology companies (Airbnb, Uber/Lyft, LinkedIn, Social Media, eCommerce) have penetrated nearly every area of society. Entrepreneurship rising in a globalized and digitized world is driving the need for more supportive ecosystems. Through digital means people’s capacity grows to go far beyond passive consumption. Empowered prosumers are getting ever better at generating value for customers: from sharing (Facebook) to shaping to funding (Kickstarter) to producing to co-owning (Linux). Technology driven social innovations change global markets and give rise to business models beyond profit (e.g. Wikipedia). How are these trends reflected in the emerging Alpe-Adria startup region?

Which elements are needed to create a supportive startup ecosystem (Higher Education Institutions, Policy, Corporations, Customers, Finance, Talent pool …)? How do they interact?

How does the technological and economic framework of the Alpe-Adriatic region influence the startup ecosystem?

How do you protect your ideas and exploit them best? Intellectual property rights (Patents, Utility Model, Industrial Design, Trademark, Copyright) are key in a knowledge-based economy.

How do you do business with technology transfer?

How do successful cooperation models between universities, startups and corporations work?

When does which startup support program work best (business incubation versus acceleration)? How does the lean startup approach influence the design of support programs?

How are startups funded at different developmental stages? (VC, BA, Crowd Funding, Impact Investing, Hybrid Finance Models)
