Course Information

Intended learning outcomes

The key aim of this course is to develop a critical understanding of selected contemporary issues in international business management. On successful completion of this module, students will be able to:

  • Demonstrate knowledge of major theories and research findings regarding the relevant issues of international business management 
  • Critically evaluate and compare the effectiveness of various international business strategies and practices 
  • Identify, synthesise and structure information regarding the module topics 
  • Communicate ideas effectively in writing 
  • To build a solid foundation on which further business studies can be developed.

Teaching methodology including the use of eLearning tools

The teaching and learning strategy is designed to develop the students’ awareness of contemporary issues in international business management, drawing upon theory, empirical research and practice. The strong emphasis on connections between research and practice is reflected in discussion of the practical implications of research findings; analysis of case studies; and critical evaluation of relevant academic text.

Interactive Learning Modules with Audio-Visual material:  an opportunity to learn and apply the concepts for solving real life challenges in interactive simulations. 

Experiential Learning . . . active participation is an important prerequisite for learning success. 

The learning focus is not narrowed by a culture-specific approach and is aimed at developing the appropriate mind-set for global effectiveness.

Important to Know: Minimum Theory! Emphasis is upon applying the concepts learned to become more effective in solving professional challenges of global business.

Course content

This course aims to provide a comprehensive introduction to the key aspects of operations and management of international business placed within organizational, environmental and managerial context. The course can be broadly divided into two major parts: the contemporary issues of International Business and the International Strategic Management. 

The underlying concepts of international business will bediscovered through the study of real-world examples. The knowledge thatstudents will have acquired by the end of the course will serve as a solidfoundation on which further learning can be acquired. 

Indicative topics (actual topics offered will be a selection from these topics, and/or others, according to contemporary relevance and a process of participatory conceptualisation)

-          Cultural issues of internationalisation  

-         Knowledge transfer and organisational learning in multinational corporations

-         International innovation strategies

-         Management of inter-organisational relations in an international context

-         Corporate social responsibility in comparative perspective

To critically examine stylized facts of international business trends globally, and in the context of emerging markets, relating them to the underlying concepts of international business.
