Course Information
Intended learning outcomes
Familiarity with the concepts of realism and constructivism in contemporary epistemology and their central arguments. You should be able either to defend or criticize realism/constructivism and their fundamental ideas..
Teaching methodology
The seminar will be in English only. No need to be afraid if your English is not perfect, mine is not either. But we are goint to speak English only in the seminar. During the first day I shall present an overview and discuss with you the concept of truth and the role truth plays in philosophy, in science and in everyday life.
Course content
You will need to write a seminar paper of 6 - 8 pages exluding a bibliography and present this paper at the second date in January, dealing with central ideas of realism and/or constructivism. I shall give you advice on which topic to choose during our first meeting in November. But without the presentation of the paper in person in January you cannot pass the seminar.
Prior knowledge expected
Basic knowledge of these two philosophical positions, realism and constructivism. Introdctory courses in epistemology. A successful participation in the seminar without having studied philosophy at least as a main subject will be very difficult.
Sufficient knowledge of English to follow a seminar which is in English only. Plus sufficient knowledge to write an English seminar paper.
Literature
I shall give you advice on how to research for literature plus present some books at our session in November.
