Course Information

Intended learning outcomes

• Students gain an understanding of core theories and methodologies in intersectional, social scientific Gender Studies. (While the course draws on theories that were developed in Gender Studies in the humanities, the focus lies on social rather than cultural studies.)

• Students develop an in-depth understanding of the intersections between gender and other axes of oppression, particularly race, sexuality, class, and dis-/ability.

• Students connect Gender Studies theories to the power relations that characterise current societal contexts.

• Students engage critically with the interconnectedness of power hierarchies and ways of knowing and connect this knowledge to their own experience at and outside of the university.

• Students develop their repertoire of expressing themselves about gender-related issues in both academic and non-academic contexts.

Teaching methodology including the use of eLearning tools

The course is strongly grounded in participatory approaches such as Paulo Freire’s ‘Pedagogy of the Oppressed’, Black (queer) feminist participatory approaches to teaching and learning (e.g. those of bell hooks), and Participatory Action Research. It assumes a participatory approach, in which the course is a space of both teaching and learning for all participants, including myself. In this understanding, learning is not primarily about giving the ‘right’ answers to preformed questions, but about partaking in developing these questions in the first place. (See also Urmila Goel’s concept of ‘Fehlerfreundlichkeit’.) In line with bell hooks’ assertion that ‘[w]hen our lived experience of theorizing is fundamentally linked to processes of self-recovery, of collective liberation, no gap exists between theory and practice’, I aim to connect academic perspectives to societal power relations and participants’ lived experiences. In order to enable such an educational environment, I work to foster an atmosphere for students to feel safe to experience new ways of thinking/feeling, to dis-/agree, to ask questions, to make mistakes, and to offer their own opinions.

Additionally, ways of learning as well as forms of (communicating) knowledge are intimately tied to power relations themselves. Therefore, the course seeks to include different ways of knowing, specifically in the selection of 'literature' that students are asked to engage with, as well as in the ways in which knowledges are produced in the course context. In addition to more conventional activities such as joint discussions, students prepare parts of the session in peer-teaching groups and engage with the materials in the form of creative writing in order to experience and better understand how the forms that knowledges take influence their Contents.

Course content

Whom do we refer to when we talk of ‘women’ and ‘men’? What is gender anyways? And what is 'gender studies'? This course seeks to ask and address these and other questions by critically reimagining hegemonic histories and canons in social scientific Gender Studies. It positions intersectional, Black and post-/decolonial, queer and trans and critical disabilities perspectives not as ‘responses to’ or ‘critiques of’ established Gender Studies concepts, but as crucial to the development of Gender Studies knowledges as such. To this end, it consistently connects questions around gender to issues such as race, post-/coloniality, queerness, sexuality, class and dis-/ability.

We begin by exploring Black feminist standpoint theories as well as post-/decolonial perspectives to better understand how societal and global power relations are intricately linked to understandings of the world. These theories are further connected to ideas around intersectionality as describing the ways in which different axes of power don’t operate in isolation, but inform and influence each other. In this context, we also examine different conceptualisations of ‘power’. We then engage with the constructedness of human bodies as well as the categories they are placed in, focusing specifically on gendered/sexed and racialised bodies as well as the construction of dis-/ability. The question of categorisation, which also underlies intersectionality, is brought into dialogue with arguments around the necessity and fixedness of such categories posed by trans and queer scholars (of colour).
