Course Information

Intended learning outcomes

This practically oriented course is aimed at providing an insight into the complicated process of providing feedback in a classroom setting. Within the course we will look at the different approaches of giving feedback based on writing performances. In the later stages the more practical details of how to employ errors and learner corpora in providing meaningful feedback will be in focus. 

Upon completion of the course, students should be able to: 

- demonstrate knowledge of assessing writing performance;

 - demonstrate a practical competence in providing feedback based on writing performance; 

- demonstrate a better knowledge of the general theoretical problems behind the provision of feedback; and

- demonstrate awareness of the use of errors in regards giving feedback.

Teaching methodology including the use of eLearning tools

The classes will typically include lectures followed by mini discussions and practical assignments in class.

  • Introduction to assessing writing
  • Core problems of assessing writing
  • Non-norm adequate features (errors) and feedback
  •  Learner corpora and provision of feedback
