Course content

Intended learning outcomes
Students will:
- develop concepts of how (not) to teach English in multilingual settings
- become familiar with didactic and pedagogical concepts for teaching English in multilingual classrooms
Teaching methodology including the use of eLearning tools
Courses will be held online via BBB as long as it is necessary. Depending on group size, we may split up into two groups to ensure that discussions and reflections will be possible.
Course content
Although language diversity is on the rise and characteristic for many classrooms in Austria, this fact has not been fully recognized in many places up to now. To assume and take as a norm monolingual learners is particularly problematic in foreign language classes. In this course we will, therefore, work out alternative ways of thinking and dealing with multilingualism in constructive ways.
Course contents:
- Topic overview & status quo
- Common sense beliefs, public opinion and politics vs. scientific findings
- Linking pedagogy and didactics: language pedagogy, educational linguistics, critical applied linguistics
- The Didactics of Multilingualism
- Inclusion and Multilingualism
- Teaching: concrete examples, creating links to general didactical principles (learner autonomy, cooperative learning, task-based learning)
