Intendierte Lernergebnisse

At the end of this course, students will be expected to be able to:

  • describe what a dialect is from a (socio-)linguistic standpoint;
  • identify key dialect features of the major dialects of the US;
  • explain how language changes happen (e.g., vowel shifts);
  • analyze an oral/written dialect text;
  • demonstrate how to represent dialect in writing; and
  • engage in creative writing to show knowledge of a dialect’s salient features.

Lehrmethodik inkl. Einsatz von eLearning-Tools

if solely online: Courses will include synchronous conducted via BBB and asynchronous sessions that require students to complete one or more tasks (often engaging with other peers about topics raised in class).

If in-person teaching is allowed, courses will take place in the designated classroom on campus on scheduled days/times. Some a/synchronous sessions on Moodle/BBB may still be incorporated.

In this course the following topics will be covered:

  • General theory about dialects, their emergence, and their classification
  • US American English dialects and their salient characteristics
  • Representation of dialect in literature, especially poetry, and other media (songs, films, newscasts, etc.)

As part of a semester-long translation project, students will specialize in a dialect chosen in consultation with the course instructor that will serve as the target language for a creative writing project to be written in dialect.

Erwartete Vorkenntnisse

At a minimum, students are expected to have a moderate to advanced knowledge about the following linguistic topics: the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA), phonology, morphology, syntax, and semantics. A cursory knowledge of these subfields in linguistics is likely insufficient to be successful in this course.
