Intendierte Lernergebnisse
At the end of this course, students will be expected to be able to:
- describe what a dialect is from a (socio-)linguistic standpoint;
- identify key dialect features of the major dialects of the US;
- explain how language changes happen (e.g., vowel shifts);
- analyze an oral/written dialect text;
- demonstrate how to represent dialect in writing; and
- engage in creative writing to show knowledge of a dialect’s salient features.

if solely online: Courses will include synchronous conducted via BBB and asynchronous sessions that require students to complete one or more tasks (often engaging with other peers about topics raised in class).
If in-person teaching is allowed, courses will take place in the designated classroom on campus on scheduled days/times. Some a/synchronous sessions on Moodle/BBB may still be incorporated.
Inhalt/e
In this course the following topics will be covered:
- General theory about dialects, their emergence, and their classification
- US American English dialects and their salient characteristics
- Representation of dialect in literature, especially poetry, and other media (songs, films, newscasts, etc.)
As part of a semester-long translation project, students will specialize in a dialect chosen in consultation with the course instructor that will serve as the target language for a creative writing project to be written in dialect.
Erwartete Vorkenntnisse
At a minimum, students are expected to have a moderate to advanced knowledge about the following linguistic topics: the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA), phonology, morphology, syntax, and semantics. A cursory knowledge of these subfields in linguistics is likely insufficient to be successful in this course.
Curriculare Anmeldevoraussetzungen
For the BA in Anglistik und Amerikanistik, at least one of the courses from the Pflichtfächer in FachclichesGrund- und Aufbaustudium Linguistics is required (Introduction toLinguistics II, Development of English, Topics in Theoretical Linguistics,Topics in Applied Linguistics, Specialised Topics in Linguistics). Ideally, more than one course has been successfully completed. In exceptional circumstances, admission to the course may be granted at the discretion of the instructor even in certain prerequisites have not been met.

Prüfungsmethode/n
Students will be graded on
- one or more creative writing assignments in dialect;
- translation journals;
- one or more essays on a particular aspect of dialectology;
- and an oral exam at the end of term.
