Inhalt/e
This seminar turns to the work of one the most prolific and widely read U.S. American authors of the twentieth century, Mississippi-born Nobel Prize-winning William C. Faulkner (1897-1962). We will read various short stories including “A Rose for Emily,” “Dry September,” or “Two Soldiers,” and two of Faulkner’s novels from his modernist major phase: As I Lay Dying (1930), in which Faulkner names his mythical Yoknapatawpha County, and Light in August (1932). To approach and make sense of Faulkner’s challenging style, we will pay close attention to the texts’ experimentation with narrative form, for example, Faulkner’s use of various types of narrators and focalization, flashbacks, his presentation of conflicting versions of events, and the effects of his neologisms. At the same time, we will connect our close readings and exploration of how Faulkner technically constructs his storyworlds with a variety of broader thematic issues like religion, sexuality, slavery, racism, or lynching, read Faulkner against modernist and postmodernist aesthetics, in the historical contexts of the Great Depression, the Great Migration, modernization, or capitalism, and as a Southern writer.
