Course Information
Course content
This course investigates ideologies of othering, which can be defined as “a set of dynamics, processes, and structures that engender marginality and persistent inequalityacross any of the full range of human differences based on group identities (powell and Menendian). This set ofdynamics, processes and structures is established by a dominant group whodefines norms and criteria to cast itself as the privileged “in-group”. Others who do notmeet these norms and criteria are, by implication, cast as belonging to an“out-group” that is devalued, discriminated and oppressed (Staszak). Some of themost common instances of othering occur in binaries such as east vs. west, manvs. woman, nature vs. culture, human vs. nonhuman, and many more. Course workwill analyze different forms of othering and build familiarity with key termscommonly used in Cultural Studies.
