Course Information

Intended learning outcomes

- to understand and be able to explain significant contemporary theories of metaphor and related phenomena

- to be able to identify a variety of  metaphors and to recognize their linguistic realizations

- to be able to apply one or more contemporary theories to an analysis of metaphors in discourse

- to learn and understand how people's production and processing of metaphors may be studied empirically

Course content

The aim of this course is to survey cognitive linguistic approaches to the study of conceptual metaphors. The focus will be on how the existence of metaphors in human verbal and non-verbal communication may be studied empirically.
