Course Information

Intended learning outcomes

The seminar focuses on selected topics of the lectures on 607.171 Introduction to International Economics and 604.000 International Economics.  Participants are in the position to correctly classify topical developments in international trade and international finance.

Teaching methodology including the use of eLearning tools

A seminar is a class with mandatory (virtual) attendance. My lectures on international economics constitute the basis for the seminar. Students draw up and present seminar papers on a topic of their choice. In addition we discuss articles from The Economist, the Financial Times and other sources to highlight contemporary developments in international economics.

Course content

Students propose topics for a seminar paper, including a research question.

The following reports provide ideas for the seminar papers:

Other possible topics include the functioning of the European Union's internal market:

  • Impact of Brexit
  • Internal market for goods and services
  • EU capital markets and the internal market for financial services
  • Internal market for intellectual property
  • EU energy policy
  • EU environmental policy, including climate change policy
  • EU Common Agricultural Policy (CAP)
  • EU competition policy

Further topics:

  • Trade and environment
  • International tax competition (taxing internet giants)
  • Currency crises
  • International labour mobility
  • The Terms-of-Trade-problem
  • Fragility/resilience of international supply chains

Examination information

Im Fall von online durchgeführten Prüfungen sind die Standards zu beachten, die die technischen Geräte der Studierenden erfüllen müssen, um an diesen Prüfungen teilnehmen zu können.

Examination methodology

Mandatory attendance and continuous evaluation of performance.

Assessment criteria / Standards of assessment for examinations

Attendance, participation in discussions, quality of the seminar paper and presentation of the paper are the basis for calculating the overall grade.

Scientific literature has to be used for the write-up of the seminar paper (e.g., sciencedirect with access from an AAU IP address).

Of key importance is the formulation of a meaningful research question and the provision of convincing answers to the research question in the conclusions section of the seminar paper.

Please produce a paper of about 4000 words. Quality is more important than quantity!

Submit the final version of your paper on paper and electronically (plagiarism check). Please quote sources correctly (direct quotations!).

Submit your presentation at least three days ahead of the presentation day so that modifications recommended by the lecturer can be made.

In the case you miss a class you have to prepare a compensatory work.

This seminar can be used to obtain credits for the sustainable development certificate.
