Course Information
Teaching methodology including the use of eLearning tools
The course will take place in the form of a seminar, with potentially some presentations and add-ons by the lecturer, but with the majority of the presentations given by the participants. Discussion of the methods and tools, including application of these methods and tools, will be the cornerstone of the seminar. Throughout, we will take care to clarify the usefulness for BEF-studies.
Given the selected teaching format and purpose, with intense discussions, a maximum number of eight participants will be accepted.
The precise time schedule will be fixed at the kick-off meeting.
Course content
This seminar is dedicated to address and mitigate one of the most pressing needs in business, economics and finance (BEF) education: Way too often the limiting factor in studying, investigating or performing research in business, economics or finance is not the content or ideas about research questions, but the limited knowledge about quantitative methods. Economics, finance and to an increasing degree also business use more and more sophisticated methods and tools from mathematics, statistics and - to bring things on the ground - computer science. In this course we will, adapted to the needs of the participants, discuss relevant mathematical and statistical methods and tools to develop or deepen our understanding of these.
Prior knowledge expected
Affinity to using mathematical and statistical tools to analyze questions in business, economics and finance. Knowledge in mathematics and statistics as taught at the bachelor and master levels. High level of motivation.
Literature
Some underlying references will be discussed at the kick-off meeting. The exact choices concerning additional literature depend on the exact topics to be studied and will be selected in relation to the exact topics chosen.
