Intended learning outcomes

By the end of this course, students should be able to:

· confidently use the English tense system and have a thorough understanding of aspect

· analyse sentences and provide in depth explanations of grammatical features using specific terminology

· actively and accurately use the vocabulary acquired throughout the course

Teaching methodology including the use of eLearning tools

Tasks in class and online, extensive self-study, homework activities and final achievement test.

Course content

This course focusses on the development of grammatical accuracy and lexical development and covers the following:

Grammar

tense and aspect, modal verbs, passive voice, relative clauses and articles.

Lexis

collocations and idiomatic expressions
vocabulary development in a broad range of topic areas including the environment, crime and the media.

IMPORTANT: due to the ongoing global pandemic, this course will be delivered online. Therefore, students must have access to a working microphone and camera.

Literature

The following texts are used throughout the course, and students need access to copies of them in order to participate. It is strongly advised that students purchase access to the interactive e-books.

Hewings Martin. Advanced Grammar in Use, Third Edition. Cambridge, UK: Cambridge University Press, 2013.

McCarthy, Michael and O’Dell Felicity. English Vocabulary in Use: Upper-intermediate, Fourth Edition. Cambridge, UK: Cambridge University Press, 2012.
