Course Information

Intended learning outcomes

You will understand the nature of empirical research in (Applied) Linguistics. You will know what is involved in planning an empirical study, collecting appropriate data, analysing the data and presenting the results of the analysis.

Teaching methodology including the use of eLearning tools

Input (partly online) from the instructor, discussion of examples of empirical research studies. Developing a research idea, presenting it in a 20-minute presentation online or f2f, and formulating a research proposal (ca. 1500 words).

Course content

Introduction

Planning an empirical study (choosing a subject, formulating research questions, quality criteria for empirical studies, how to arrive at a research design, defining variables)

Data collection (observation, working with corpora, questionnaires, experiments)

Data analysis (types of scales, desribing the data, relationships among the data, differences and changes, significance)

Writing up the research (abstract; introduction, theoretical context and literature review; research questions andhypotheses; method (research design); presenting the results; discussing theresults (implications, suggestions for further research)
