Course Information

Intended learning outcomes

Students will form a comprehensive theoretical understanding of the thematic specificity of Canadian literature and be able to trace major developments and movements over time. They will be familiar with key authors and know how to situate them in their time and specific subset of Canadian society.

Teaching methodology including the use of eLearning tools

Concise student presentations of selected texts and authors, as well as plenary discussions thereof.

Contextualised close readings of selected example passages.

Course content

Canada is a very young nation, and as such its national literature could only be shaped and defined very late in its history. From Confederation in 1867 to the patriation of the Constitution in 1982, more than a hundred years would pass where Canadians were trying to come to terms with their very own cultural identity. In this course, we will have a look at several important texts of Canadian literature (aka CanLit) and situate them in their historical, social, and cultural contexts.

Literature

All relevant literature will be made available on Moodle.

Students are expected to own at least a copy of the text they are presenting.
