Intendierte Lernergebnisse

After the Survey, students will be well equipped to work with American literature in later classes, as they understand the connections between texts, as well as texts and society.

Lehrmethodik inkl. Einsatz von eLearning-Tools

Lecture and in-class discussion of examples. All lectures will be made available on Moodle along with Forums for questions and answers. In addition, there will be synchronous Q&A sessions. Detailed information will be provided by email and in the class syllabus on Moodle.

Inhalt/e

As an introductory lecture course, this class provides students with an overview of American literary history and an introduction to the diverse range of literary production in the United States. It will attend to both dominant more marginal(ized) literary voices, ranging from discovery narratives and the early colonial period to the present day. We will critically engage with the notion of the American literary canon and also reflect on a range of approaches and theories that scholars have used in order to analyze and make sense of the texts included in it.

Literatur

All primary texts and other relevant literature will be made available on Moodle on a weekly basis.
