Intendierte Lernergebnisse

After completing this course, students should

be able to talk about the many facets of error analysis (EA), the steps required, its usefulness, its problems
be able to conduct an EA
know different ways of describing errors (error taxonomies)
know about the applications of EA, especially in teaching/SLA
know about the limitations of EA
be able to discuss the issue of “counting vs judging” in assessment
know about the CEFR and its relation to errors
should be able to give an overview of how writing is assessed in the Austrian education system
be able to conduct an annotator agreement study
be able to apply the Scope - Substance error taxonomy

Please note this will be an online-only course. Most of the sessions will be streamed live (mandatory attendence!), some contents will be provided on Moodle for self-study.

The Scope – Substance error taxonomy
Validity and reliability
Agreement studies
The CEFR – a push towards judging performances
Assessing Writing in the Austrian education system
Applications of EA in research (e.g. validation, SLA, etc.)
Counting vs judging in assessment
(optional) I have the data, now what? Introduction to basics of descriptive statistics

Erwartete Vorkenntnisse

Students should have successfully completed Introduction to Linguistics I, Introduction to Linguistics II and Language Awareness I.

Students should have a good knowledge of syntax.

The planned written exam is replaced by a remote online exam. The topics and structure of the exam stay unchanged.

Topics covered in class and in self-study

We will do a preparation session, and I will provide sample questions after each session (or the students will come up with questions themselves)

Beurteilungskriterien/-maßstäbe

attendance and participation (applies also to online sessions!)
home assignments (including assignments within the self-study elements of the course)
final exam at the end of the semester (theory + practical part)

IMPORTANT:

students need to receive a positive grade for all three pillars to pass the course
students must pass all (home and self-study) assignments to pass pillar 2
students who fail to attend, without sufficient reason, more than 2 sessions of the course, will automatically receive a fail grade
