LV-Beschreibung

Intendierte Lernergebnisse

Students will have the opportunity to

  • learn about how to find an appropriate BA thesis topic;
  • conduct preliminary research to narrow the topic's focus;
  • write clear research questions; and
  • conduct in-depth research for their topic.

Students will also have the opportunity to learn about others aspects of the writing process, including using academic vocabulary, avoiding bias, and improving English grammar.  Students will gain extensive knowledge of the Chicago Manual of Style guide and how to consult it in order to improve their writing.

Students are expected to be able to

  • write formal, academic essays in English;
  • conduct basic research on an academic topic;
  • use a wide range of academic vocabulary and grammatical structures effectively; and
  • use the CMOS for basic citation and referencing.

Lehrmethodik inkl. Einsatz von eLearning-Tools

This course will be conducted via blended-learning. This means there will be some classes when you will need to be present in the classroom, some where you are working on assignments on your own, and some where we are all online together (but not together in the same room). This schedule will be discussed and agreed upon with students insofar as possible. I will be in contact after the admission process (Aufnahmeselektion) is complete with further details.

You should have, at a minimum, a device with a stable internet connection, a microphone, and (should it be needed) a camera. These will facilitate any eLearning sessions in this course.

Inhalt/e

Students will do the following in this course:

  • brainstorm appropriate topics for a BA thesis;
  • write research questions to address these topics;
  • conduct research to narrow/broaden research focus;
  • analyze other BA theses for form, content, and methodology;
  • analyze thesis abstracts and write their own;
  • conduct extensive research for a BA thesis; and
  • write a annotated bibliography according to the Chicago Manual of Style.

Students are not expected to complete their thesis for a grade in this course. For students who will not be writing their thesis in this term, the above content objectives will be applied to a (pro)seminar paper or some other writing assignment in consultation with the course instructor.
