Intended learning outcomes

By the end of this course, students should be able to:

· discuss a topic critically and from multiple perspectives

· deliver a well-structured and engaging presentation (including a content and summary slide)

· demonstrate effective listening skills (including producing an accurate and detailed transcription)

Teaching methodology including the use of eLearning tools

Extensive group work, workshops, online, self-study and oral assessments in class.

Course content

This class aims to improve students’ fluency in spoken English and develop students' ability to use the language for both academic and professional purposes.

Specific skills that will be developed throughout this course are:

presentation skills
ability to debate a broad range of current topics and issues
listening skills
critical thinking skills
analytical skills

Key topics that will be covered throughout this course include:

institutional talk
foundations of conversation analysis

IMPORTANT: due to the ongoing global pandemic, the structure of this course will be adapted as best as possible to meet students’ needs, whilst also complying with the regulations set out by the University. In order to keep students and staff safe, a majority of the sessions for this course will take place online. Therefore, students must have access to a working microphone and camera.
