Course Information

Intended learning outcomes

Students will learn the basics of how to construct a research-based academic essay. Students will read short stories and will learn how to utilize primary and secondary sources in an English academic essay.

Students are expected to have the following:

  • an understanding of how to organize and write paragraphs;
  • an understanding of how to plan, write, and revise different essay types; and
  • knowledge of basic citation and referencing conventions.

Teaching methodology including the use of eLearning tools

This course will be conducted via blended-learning. This means there will be some classes when you will need to be present in the classroom, some where you are working on assignments on your own, and some where we are all online together (but not together in the same room). This schedule will be discussed and agreed upon with students insofar as possible. I will be in contact after the admission process (Aufnahmeselektion) is complete with further details.

You should have, at a minimum, a device with a stable internet connection, a microphone, and (should it be needed) a camera. These will facilitate any eLearning sessions in this course.

Course content

This course provides an opportunity for students to practice and develop their academic writing skills in English. Some of the topics that will be covered are the structure and organization of academic texts, the nature and purpose of paragraphs, the development of coherent pieces of writing, the issue of plagiarism, and how to write term papers.

In addition to extensive in-class, peer, and teacher feedback, students are expected to engage in self-directed learning and should avail themselves of the provided materials to improve their writing.

The following topics may be covered though content may vary based on student needs:

  • academic essays
  • exam essays
  • doing research for assignments
  • using quotations appropriately
  • avoiding plagiarism
  • organizing writing
  • conventions of academic style
  • peer review/feedback

Curricular registration requirements

Assessment criteria / Standards of assessment for examinations

The grading for this course will be based on:

  • a timed, in-class essay and
  • an outside-of-class research-based essay.

Both essays must have a pass grade in order to pass the course.

Students are also required to complete multiple in-class and homework assignments throughout the course of the term. These will comprise a portfolio that students will compile and improve over the course of the semester.
